Elks Speech Therapy and Training Services offers therapy on an individual basis for children where requested by a parent and as part of services to schools and nurseries. Below you’ll find details of all the options available.

For individual children, where therapy is requested by the parent, it is given on a 1:1 basis . We actively encourage parents to be part of the process so that they can continue to work on the strategies and activities during the week.  Therapy is carried out in your home.  Collaborative working between the therapist and your child’s school or nursery is beneficial and so we will also recommend a school visit to discuss progress and carry over therapy targets into that setting too.  This will only be done with your agreement and consent.

To ensure that we are offering the best programme for you and your child you will be offered an initial assessment.  This will sometimes be carried out by Cath and Liz together, or by one therapist only, this decision is made by Cath and Liz.  At this appointment we will talk to you about your child and his progress to date.  We will also use some formal tests and informal assessments to work out what his needs are and the best way we can help to meet those needs.  If your child is working with an NHS SLT we will contact her with your permission to ensure that we are working in harmony together, in the best interests of your child.

  1. An initial period of therapy for 6 weeks, after which we will review progress together and determine the next step.
  2. Give you advice and strategies to help and monitor progress.
  3. Suggest attendance at an Elklan training course designed to help you understand your child’s difficulties and help him or her most effectively.
  4. Discharge if it is not felt that speech and language therapy is required at this time.
  5. Refer your child on to other professionals for assessment or advice.

Sometimes a combination of the above may be recommended.

Following the initial assessment a detailed report will be written outlining the recommendations for therapy and advice on how to improve your child’s communication skills.
